Barbapapa is one of two American English dubs of the 1974 TV series of the same name, and is one of five English dubs overall. It was produced by Centauro Group in Miami, Florida, and was released on DVDs in South Korea in 2006[1] to teach Korean children English. It is the second American English dub made for the series, and the fifth English dub overall. Like the original, a narrator did the voices for every character in season one, while in season two the characters all have individual voices.

Clips of the dub can be seen on Centauro's demo reel videos.[2][3]

Cast[edit]

Like the original version of the series, season one only utilizes one voice actor. In season two, the characters were all given individual voices performed by various actors, and the voice of Barbapapa himself was replaced while the narrator retained his primary role. Nearly the same actors also reprised their roles for Barbapapa Around the World, except for the narrator, who was replaced by a female narrator in that series. It is not known who all of these actors are.

The only voice actors who have revealed that they've voice acted on this dub is Kian B. Fan[4] (though according to him, his role was so minor that he did not know whoever he was voicing, and Centauro would not tell him) and Kais Kappler, who was the female singer of all the songs[5].

Song Guide[edit]

All of the songs were dubbed, and were appropriately used as they were in the original version. They were uploaded to the official Barbapapa YouTube channel, but all of them are shortened to 30 seconds. To this day, the full songs have not seen an official release.

The intro in this dub accidently repeats Barbabelle's name during the roll call, and in exchange leaves out Barbalib's name. It is also the only English dub to do the roll call in the closest way to the original. The subtitles reveal that the role caller was meant to say Barbalib's name at the second time he says Barbabelle's.

The lyrics in these songs are mostly taken from the British versions of them when available. In one of the songs, the British version has a dad telling his kid to grab a hammer and nail and "when [he] nods his head, hit it", and then he says "Owww!", implying that the kid hit the dad's head. However this was changed in Centauro's cover, which has him talking about holding a ladder.

Notes[edit]

  • The dub was released on South Korean DVDs with English and Korean subtitles.
    • Despite having Korean subtitles as an option, these DVDs don't contain a Korean dub.
    • On these DVDs, certain episodes were given the same title and treated as "parts", due to sharing the same plot. For example, the first two episodes of the first season are both titled "Acquaintances", despite otherwise being two separate episodes.
    • Some of the episodes share titles with later episodes; for example, the first part of "Animal Rescue" is episode 31, while the final episodes of the first season all continue on with the same title.
    • Also, the episode titles appear for a few seconds at the start of each episode, in yellow font.
  • This dub shares a similar script with the Japanese English dub that would, similarly, only be made available in DVDs and VHSes in Japan years earlier. Because of this, it shares some similarities, such as Frank's name still being localized as Francois in season 1; but there are also some differences, such as their transformation phrase being translated here simply as "Barbatrick!".
  • In season two, Frank's name (who was previously known as Francois here) is suddenly kept as Frank.
  • The first 75 episodes of this dub was included in the first DVD set, while the rest and Barbapapa Around the World episodes were included in the second set.
  • In the first season, Barbamama was given a slightly Irish accent. Barbapapa's voice in that season has also been noted to sound very much like Goofy.
  • Despite being produced in the United States, this dub was not aired or released anywhere in that country, unlike the first American English dub.
  • A few typos and mistakes were made on some episode titles, such as:
    • In one episode, "mysterious" is mispelled as "mystrious".
    • "Barbabravo's Motorcar" was mistyped as "Barbabaravo' Motorcar".
    • An episode was titled "The Barbapapa Outdoor School" in part 1, however when part 2 was released, the title was suddenly changed to "Barbapapa's Outdoor School".
    • "Milking Time" was listed as "Milking Time 1", indicating that there would be a second part, however this didn't happen.
    • The title of the episode "Harbour" uses the British/Canadian/Australian spelling of the word "harbor," despite the dub being in American English and produced in the United States.
    • Some spelling mistakes were also made in the subtitles for the episodes. It can be assumed that they weren't issued out by Centauro themselves and were instead done by the Korean people who made the DVDs.
  • This dub might be the most faithful of all the English dubs of the series; like the original, the narrator does the voice for all of the characters in the first season while gaining individual voices in the second, the musical melodies within the episodes are fully dubbed, and the dialogue is appropriately translated.
  • Centauro Comunicaciones would also dub the 1999 spin-off series, Barbapapa Around the World on the same set as most of the second season, as shown here.
